Background
The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of GLOBAL SCIENCE UNIVERSITY (GSU) was the first faculty opened by the university in 2014. The first intake started on September 1st of the academic year 2014-2015. The faculty has produced since then qualified medical doctors who are currently practicing their profession at different institutions inside and outside Somalia.
The initiative to establish a Faculty of Medicine in Galkacyo was crucial to address the country’s pressing healthcare challenges as Somalia faces a critical shortage of skilled healthcare professionals. The opening of the faculty aimed to produce qualified medical professionals to meet the country’s healthcare needs. Additionally, the distribution of healthcare professionals is uneven, with rural areas being particularly underserved. This urban-rural disparity exacerbates the challenges in healthcare service delivery, leaving many communities without adequate medical care.
In this context, Global Science University’s new Faculty of Medicine in Galkacyo has the potential to contribute significantly to increasing the number of qualified medical professionals in Somalia. To maximize its impact, it is crucial for the university to focus on delivering high-quality education, adhere to rigorous accreditation standards, and implement strategies to encourage graduates to serve in underserved regions. This approach will help address the critical need for qualified medical doctors and improve healthcare access and outcomes across Somalia.
